Case Study: Roger

Roger was 9 years old when he was brought to Occupational Therapy for assessment by his parents. Their general concern, supported by his teacher, was that Roger was not meeting his potential.

Roger was a low average performer at school, somewhat slow with tasks. He ahd a good netwrok of friends and was well liked by everyone, was a courteous and pleasant boy, and enjoyed sporting activities.

His parents had taken him to other health professionals and although mild memory, learning and processing issues were identified, there was nothing significant that could be addressed. Yet his parents knew that he could achieve much more.

Occupational Therapy assessment revealed that Roger had Bilateral Integration and Sequencing issues. Bilateral Interation and Sequencing is the ability to use both sides of the body in a co-ordinated manner for skilful completion of tasks.

Having identified these difficulties, Roger began 3 months of Occupational Therapy treatment followed by 7 weeks of twice weekly Interactive Metronome sessions.

Results of Interactive Metronome intervention were as follows:

  • Roger's reading level increased by 6 levels (2 levels higher than required/expected by his teacher), with Roger reporting enjoyment of reading. He now reads every night for enjoyment.
  • Improved handwriting.
  • gains in eye-hand and eye-foot co-ordiantion. He is now consistently beating his Dad in video games! Roger had been playing soccer for a couple of years without being an outstanding player. He is now scoring goals at almost every game and was voted most improved player.
  • Improved organization and planning. Roger can now coplete assignment tasks and daily homework independently and in a timely manner. Previously his mother needed to constantly prompt him and very often this results in fights. He can now complete daily routine tasks without requiring constant prompting.
  • Improved self confidence and eagerness to try new and challenging activities.

He was discharged from Occupational Therapy, with no further intervention required.
