Sensory Based Motor Disorder (SBMD).

Shows motor output that is disorganized as a result of incorrect processing of sensory information.

A) Postural-occular issues (vestibular-proprioceptive)

This appears to be caused when children have difficulties with the integration of proprioceptive and vestibular information. Common symptoms include:

  • Low muscle tone
  • Weak trunk, shoulder and hand muscles
  • Low endurance
  • Looks floppy and clumsy
  • Trouble with eye-tracking movements
  • Low confidence with climbing or moving on unstable surfaces

B) Bilateral integration and Sequencing

This appears to be caused when children have difficulties with the integration of vestibular/ visual/ auditory information. Common symptoms include trouble:

  • Coordinating the two sides of their body
  • Timing movements
  • Sequencing movements
  • Timing their own movements to interact effectively with moving objects (e.g. running while catching a ball, running and jumping over a moving rope).

These children will often have functional motor skills but have had to work much harder and take much longer to learn new skills - e.g. ball skills, swimming and riding a bike.
