Testimonial: Larry
"Larry received his formal diagnosis of Autism at just 2 years and 4 months. I was not shocked by the diagnosis - as a mother you know when something is not "quite right" with your child. Knowing this, still did not make the "official diagnosis" and the bluntness of the doctor's predictions of the bleak future any easier to hear. Our best hope was some early intervention along the lines of occupational and speech therapy.
On a journey with ASD - Autism you come into contact with a lot of specialists, therapists, doctors and so called "ASD Guru's". It does not take long to work out who cares about your child and their well being and who is just going through the motions of seeing another "autistic child". From our very first session with Marga (Kids Matters OT) it was obvious to me that helping Larry was of the highest priority to her. To Marga, Larry was Larry, no label required. Marga set out to gain Larry's trust not by pushing or drilling him into activities he did not or was not ready for but by just being with him. Letting him know that he was ok and she was accepting of him. In time this proved to be very fruitful. Marga has now built a loving, caring and trusting relationship with Larry. The different techniques used at Kids Matters have helped me identify the "triggers" and to learn calming effects to help Larry cope with new and different environments. The audio processing therapy has helped Larry immensely - after a week of audio therapy Larry suddenly heard the phone ringing and led me by the hand to answer it!!
Just a short note to Marga our caring therapist - No matter how negative the behaviour and how dismal I would feel, you without fail always highlighted a positive. You keep the light at the end of our tunnel glowing!"
